Resumen:

With the penetration of renewable energy sources to reduce the emissions of carbon-emitting technologies, there has been an increased interest towards using batteries to improve system reliability. However, batteries have a limited lifespan due to the degradation process that occurs during the charge and discharge cycles, resulting in a decrement in their energy storage capacity. Most of the batteries’ operating costs are related to this process, making these costs necessary to be included in the economic dispatches. This paper proposes a new mathematical model that formulates and solves an economic dispatch problem considering the battery's charge and discharge cycles as output variables. The model considers an endogenous representation of the ageing cost and, therefore, impacts other model variables. A series of case studies for the MIBEL system has been carried out, analyzing the effect of considering the ageing cost versus not considering it.
